ABSTRACT
Historical constructions constitute a very important component of the cultural heritage asset worldwide. In the majority of the cases, such structures are made in masonry or timber, but there are also some examples of steel and concrete constructions. Generally, they show a certain robustness against environmental and other causes of deterioration but after centuries of being built, they may exhibit signs of ageing, which can be responsible for sudden failures. On the other hand, extreme events (such as earthquakes, floods and storms) are particularly dangerous for such kind of structures, because not designed to withstand the aforementioned loads. In this context, a continuous safety assessment is seen as necessary for revenue earning through their touristic, infrastructural, and educational use.
The overall objective of this Special Session is to exchange ideas and new research trends towards the continuous assessment, conservation and re-functionalization of historical structures. Topics of interest of the SS are -among the others- (i) high-definition surveying and BIM, (ii) advanced numerical analyses, (iii) load testing and monitoring of structures, and (iv) IoT-based long-term monitoring.
