ABSTRACT
Monitoring the built environment is fundamental to have holistic information on its general status: from the structural health to the indoor environmental conditions, through the well-being of its occupants. Nowadays the implementations of Building Information Modelling (BIM)-based solutions are constantly expanding for the design, construction, and maintenance of buildings, covering the whole life cycle of a structure. These approaches provide information exploitable also for early warning purposes, which is of particular interest when facing critical/emergency situations, such as in case of natural disasters (e.g., seismic events, floods, etc.). Through the integration of multidomain data from sensors installed in the building itself, it is possible to ease the update of the BIM enriching it with data exploitable for multipurpose monitoring. Also, physiological data coming from wearable sensors worn by the occupants can be integrated to predict the physiological status of the occupants together with their feedback on the environmental conditions. This information is relevant for the optimization of the building energy efficiency and can lead to a top-level management of the built environment, with a view to structural health, energy-related aspects, and also subjective satisfaction with the environmental conditions.
This Special Session aims to promote the latest research contributions in this research field. Original papers are invited to be submitted pointing out studies on the development of sensors, measurement procedures, and digital technologies providing information exploitable to enrich the BIM of a building, potentially enhancing its monitoring and, hence, general performance.
This Special Session is organized in the framework of MULTICLIMACT project (GA n° 101123538), aiming at developing monitoring solutions to improve built environment and human resilience towards natural hazards.

- Enrichment of BIM with data from multidomain sensors;
- Innovative solutions to improve the built environment;
- Monitoring solutions for the built environment;
- The role of Artificial Intelligence in processing data collected in the built environment;
- Data processing techniques.
ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS
Gloria Cosoli, received the B.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering (with honors) and the M.S. degree in Electronic Engineering (with honors) from Università Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM), Ancona, Italy, in 2011 and 2013, respectively. She received the Ph. D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the same university in 2017 with a thesis titled “Study and Development of a Novel Radio Frequency Electromedical Device for the Treatment of Peri-Implantitis: Experimental Performance Analysis, Modelling of the Electromagnetic Interaction with Tissues and In Vitro and In Vivo Evaluation”. Since November 2016 to date, she has been a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Department of Industrial Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (DIISM) of UNIVPM. Her research interests focus on non-invasive physiological measurements and monitoring techniques, thermal and mechanical measurements, non-destructive monitoring techniques, numerical modelling, and signal processing.
