Safety assessment and long-term behavior of heritage masonry structures with traditional and innovative metrology techniques

ABSTRACT

Historical structures constitute a very important component of the cultural heritage worldwide. Generally, heritage masonry structures show robustness against environmental and other causes of deterioration. However after centuries of being built, these structures show signs of ageing, which finally lead to their “structural” failure. A continuous safety assessment of these structures is necessary for revenue earning through their touristic, infrastructural, and educational use.

The overall objective of this Special Session is to exchange ideas and new research trends towards the continuous assessment, conservation and re-functionalization of heritage masonry structures. Topics of interest of the SS are -among the others- (i) high-definition surveying and BIM, (ii) advanced numerical analyses, (iii) load testing and monitoring of structures, and (iv) IoT-based long-term monitoring.
